While waiting to attend a fish fry at our local Riverside Park, my husband and son decided to do a bit of fishing. The river was low at the time, so the bank was steep, rocky and muddy. I wanted to walk over to where they were fishing. Not a good idea for a klutz in flip flops. My daughter told me not to walk on the bank because I was going to fall in the river. My response. “No I won’t, I’m fine.” Famous last words. Just as I decided I could not make it over to my intended destination, I turned to go back and, SPLASH! Yep, I was totally submerged in the Missouri River. If you know anything about the Missouri River, falling in is a very scary thing. I grew up on the river so I have a huge respect for it. I would not voluntarily swim in that river. When I fell in, I hit a huge sharp rock under the surface of the water, so I was bruised and scrapped up from head to toe. It took weeks to fully recover. Months later my knee is still very painful. So, due to my stubbornness, I had to spend the rest of the fish fry soaking wet, smelling like muddy, fishy river water and my daughter got to say, “I told you so.”
